Henna, also known as Mehendi, originates from India and is derived from a plant called Lawsonia Enermims. Although the history and origin of Henna is hard to trace, it has been used for at least 5,000 years in both cosmetic and healing capacities. Henna is most commonly used as temporary body art which stains the skin for 7-10 days and has no adverse side effects due to its natural origin. In addition, the Henna aroma is very relaxing and calming, which has restorative effects on the body and mind. Traditional henna is used for weddings, spiritual events, ring ceremonies, baby showers, and other celebrations.

Avani was born and raised in a village in the state of Gujarat, India, where henna is commonly used by women as adornment for any function. Inspired by its beauty, Avani decided to teach herself the art of henna. She started practicing on friends and family members as early as eight years old. She now has her own studio, Avani Henna, sharing her talents with the Greater Seattle area.

]]> The major difference between hennas and tattoos is how they are placed on our bodies, as well as how long they last. For one thing, tattoos are placed via a needle under the topmost layer of our skin and are therefore permanent. Henna on the other hand, is ink that sits on top of our skin.

Tattoos are permanent and they pierce the skin to carry the ink down to the blood bearing layers of the skin to create a design that is permanent. By contrast, henna is a temporary dye that just sits on the surface of the skin. It only stains the dead layers of skin cells and it lasts about few weeks. Henna comes out darkest on the hands and the feet where the skin is the thickest. And by contrast, the tattoos do not take as well on the hands and the feet because the skin tends to bleed and fade and ruin the tattoo design. In addition, henna is different from tattoo in the style of the art. Henna designs are usually traditional designs from India and the Middle East and North Africa, and they are very different from tattoo designs. But these designs can be made into tattoos.

Henna is a small tree, and its leaves contain a dye which stains your skin – similar to turmeric or beets. However, with henna, the dye molecule (lawsone) binds to the keratin in your skin, which makes it a permanent stain!

Henna can also refer to the temporary body art resulting from the staining of the skin from the dyes (see also mehndi). After henna stains reach their peak color, they hold for a few days, then gradually wear off by way of exfoliation, typically within one to three weeks.

Mehndi is a form of body art and temporary skin decoration originating in ancient India, in which decorative designs are created on a person’s body, using a paste, created from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant (Lawsonia inermis). Dating back to ancient India, mehndi is still a popular form of body art among the women of the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, the Maldives, Africa and the Middle East. In the late 1990s, mehndi decorations became fashionable in the West, popularized by Indian cinema and entertainment industry, where they are called henna tattoos.

 

 

Henna has been used since antiquity to dye skin, hair, and fingernails, as well as fabrics including silk, wool and leather.
